SMC³ Fall Seminar To Focus on Surface Transportation Costing
Sessions will explore cost drivers throughout the supply chain

Peachtree City, Ga. - July 6, 2005—The fourth part of SMC³'s 2005 Educational Program, "Costing Today's Distribution Channel," will investigate how the principles of costing are applied to motor, rail and ocean transportation. The seminar will explore the distribution channel's key cost drivers affecting both sides of the shipper/carrier equation.

The seminar, which is scheduled take place September 14-15 at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Atlanta, will cover three main topics: cost accounting, motor carrier costing efficiencies, and global supply chain costing and tactics for controlling expenses. Speakers include Dan Acker, vice president of operations, SMC³, and Ken Manning, president, Transportation Costing Group, Inc.

“Making a global supply chain lean and efficient means understanding the cost structure and capabilities of each surface transportation mode. This seminar is designed to help trading partners understand their role in today's global supply chain and, through collaboration, identify efficiencies that improve service and reduce costs,” Acker said.

The seminar will begin with a session on how cost accounting concepts are applied to surface transportation modes and an overview of costing methodologies. The motor carrier costing sessions will cover the major expense categories involved in transporting a shipment and how shippers and motor carriers can gain efficiencies and lower costs to effect savings on both sides of the shipment equation.

The seminar’s third component will examine the global supply chain’s cost categories by constructing a global supply chain activity matrix. In this interactive session, participants will create a matrix that identifies the unique and comparable activities incurring cost for each surface transportation mode. The concept will be reinforced by examining the cost reduction opportunities and efficiencies by surface transportation mode for shipments moving from a foreign origin to a final U.S. destination.
