How Dimensional Technology Improves Transportation and Logistics Processes
New Start Time 1 p.m.- Moderator: Danny B. Slaton, SMC³
- Rick Keeler, Old Dominion Freight Line Inc.
- Ken Manning, Transportation Costing Group, Inc. (TCG)
- Jerry Stoll, Mettler-Toledo, Inc.
Space is a primary resource in transportation and logistics. To be efficient, today’s supply chain requires reliable weighting and dimensioning information for planning, production, pricing and other key activities. An emerging generation of technologies allows shippers, carriers and logistics service providers to capture accurate dimensioning data, even in highly automated processes, and share it electronically throughout the supply chain. In this afternoon program, panelists will use case studies and product demos to explore how these new technologies can improve material handling processes, increase capacity utilization with fewer resources, support costing and pricing accuracy, and create positive gains in your green initiatives. Following the presentations we’ll pay a visit to the Old Dominion Freight Lines LTL terminal, where you’ll see dimensional technology in action—so wear comfortable walking shoes!
You will learn:- How shipment density and distance work together to impact carrier costs
- What an LTL terminal that has integrated dimensioning technology within its work flow really looks—and operates—like
- Why dimensional information improves planning and supports greening by reducing the carbon footprint of LTL shipments
- How the next generation of density pricing supports the global supply chain
Economic Indices as a Forecasting Tool
Bernard Baumohl, The Economic Outlook Group, LLCNew Start Time 1 p.m.
As the economy recovers from recession, new questions arise. What kind of business activity can we expect next year and what are the implications for the freight transportation sector? Is this recovery real and sustainable, or will the economy shortly slip back into recession?
To answer these and other questions, we often turn to popular economic indicators for clues on where the economy is heading. Attendees are encouraged to bring laptops, as this interactive session will demonstrate how freely available online information can be leveraged for business benefit:
- Which indicators have a track record of being ahead of the business curve? How do you find and read them?
- What economic measures can help predict demand for freight transportation services, and thus better anticipate the need for drivers and equipment?
- What real-time indicators tell us if banks are lending again?
- As international trade grows in importance, how does it affect domestic businesses and what indicators should you look for?
If you are involved in forecasting and budgeting, you will not want to miss this session!

Brace for Impact
Dave K. SandersonWhen US Airways Flight 1549, or “The Miracle on the Hudson,” ditched into the Hudson River on January 15, 2009, Dave Sanderson knew he was exactly where he was supposed to be. The last passenger off the back of the plane on that fateful day, he was largely responsible for the well-being and safety of others, risking his own life in frigid water to help other passengers off the plane. Despite the hazards to himself, Sanderson thought only of helping others, and emerged from the wreckage with a mission: to encourage others to do the right thing. In this stirring presentation, Sanderson shares the story of Flight 1549, revealing the inner strength it took to make it through the day, and how teamwork, leadership, and state management can help overcome any obstacle.
